A Rooftop That Stays Cool Naturally

On a summer afternoon, most rooftops in the city radiate heat long after the sun has moved on. But one terrace, tucked above a busy residential block, tells a different story. Shaded by native trees and layered planting, it stays noticeably cooler than the concrete around it — proof that good design can quietly undo decades of heat build-up.

The transformation began with a simple question: what if a rooftop could behave like a forest floor instead of a parking lot? That single shift in thinking guided every decision that followed, from the plants that were chosen to the way water moves through the space.

Designing With Shade and Airflow

Instead of open, sun-baked paving, the design layers canopy trees, mid-height shrubs and ground cover to create shade at every level. Pergolas draped in climbing vines soften harsh afternoon light, while gaps between planting beds allow breeze to move freely across the terrace rather than pooling as trapped heat.

This layered approach does more than cool the air. It creates distinct pockets of space — a shaded seating corner, a sunlit herb patch, a quiet reading nook — so the rooftop feels like several small gardens rather than one flat surface.
